Pimp My Blog!

Okay guys, you have to admit it, my blog’s design stinks! I just opened this account and grabbed what Blogger offered me. I worried more about the tools like RSS, email subscriptions, content, links to useful resources etc. I know nothing about blog skins and how to work them, so I left it pretty much alone. But I need to project an image here, and I want my readers to enjoy hanging around.

So I beg you, PIMP MY BLOG!

Is there such thing? I love that program on TV, Pimp My Ride and I see how they transform a piece of junk car and make look awesome and cool. Can someone have compasion on me and help me out? Listen, I know a little HTML and can manage good with websites but I don’t get this blog design thing. I read the 50 ways to become a better designer and it helped me some until the designers started with their design lingo that I haven’t learn yet. I also found this great tutorial from Tutorials by Jennifer at photoshopsupport dot com which I intend to dig in since I bought PhotoShop Elements 4 a couple of months ago along with the book The Photoshop Elements 4 Book for Digital Photographers but haven’t got the time to work with it. I also found this great site with ready-made templates. Don’t get me wrong, I love to research and to learn new things everyday but I don’t have much time, you know? Maybe some creative designer will like to take a challenge, heck maybe a few would and we can post a few layouts of their work and do a poll or something. I’m just rambling here, my mind goes faster than my fingers. What is CSS? I know I need to know about this in order to create something unique.

I love the feel of my 360 degree site at Yahoo! If I can duplicate something like that it would be great. Can I use the Page View and copy the source? I know that 360 degree Yahoo! Have features that my blog doesn’t support but I just love it! Anyway what do you think? Any suggestions, ideas, critiques? I have pretty thick skin.

MySpace Research Project Update

It has been about a week since we started this research and we have a few comments and ideas on how to best utilize the site for promoting our products or services. The last comment was left by Lee Tamargo, spanish author who have been using the site to connect to readers. His challenge has been the language since MySpace is not available in Spanish yet, but I don't doubt that that will be the next step for them since Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world. Talks about their European expansion is already going around.

In observing the site and looking at succesful people in MySpace I noticed how they include multiple ways for the people to connect to them. Usually their websites URL is posted with their profiles along with any eZines they offer, and on the bulletin they keep their friends updated of any special events, promotions, contests or appeareances. All this make a combination for success. On their website they also include their MySpace link.

We have been fortunate here at Guerrilla Insight to have Niambi, a very successful author who is learning how to get the best of MySpace helping us with her experience. She is contributing to this blog as well as our forum where we have been talking about marketing since April. More and more people are finding their way to the forum and helping with the research. Even Search Engine Lowdown has done part of the research on a different angle.

I think we can make it work if we concentrate on developing ways to communicate and connect to our audience. Selling will be a hard thing to do, what we need to do is let our audience get to know us and feel comfortable enough to go the next step and visit our websites, join our mailing lists for valuable information, to be notified of special events, contests, discounts etc. To give them a chance to get to know others with similar taste an become friends as well. I believe that is the key here. It's about creating community, a community of authors and readers.

The music section of the site is a already a hit, with bands counting with thousands of friends on their lists. The have cool pages with lost of pictures, videos, audio clips and more. Perhaps that is something we could also include in our space, an audio of our books or part of it, maybe a special message to our visitors and friends. A daily or weekly inspirational audio message. There is a Book Section available now which we will need to explore. This is coming to me as I write this, there is so much we could do. Tell me what you think, is there any other ways in which you see authors connecting to readers on MySpace?

MySpace Research Project

A long discussion about using MySpace as advertising has been part of Guerrilla Marketers @ Lulu Forum since April. Jumping onboard last week was Adam Schultz from Search Engine Lowdown.
Adam has been analyzing how to use MySpace as a tool for marketing for a while after he saw the potential with the success of the X-Man movie release who created a MySpace for its promotion. But what caught my attention was his entry on another author, Niambi, who has successfully created her MySpace and attracted over a thousand people to it. I would love to have her come here and share some of her experience with the site.

Since we deal with authors in our site we are exploring the possibilities to use this medium to create awareness for our books and connect to our readers. I just found out today about a new area in MySpace Books.

We have one author, Alan Baxter, who is using the medium to network with people who enjoy Dark Fantasy Fiction and getting some friends already reading his book and commenting on his space. He also uses it to drive people to his regularly updated blog.

The jury is out, the market potential is there, I guess it will be a matter of learning how to make it work and hopefully we’ll find a way right here. If we put our heads together and share our experiences I’m sure we’ll get somewhere.

So here is the deal for this research; for those authors who have a MySpace and would like to participate of this research I’ll welcome your ideas and experiences. Anything at all that you can think of, we'll look into it and see if we can put it to the test and share the results here. Make an entry on your blog and email me the link post to share here at Guerrilla Insight. We'll be storming some ideas and sharing experiences until the end of the month.

A New Breed of Branded RSS Reader: Inclue!

Inclue!, just released a couple of days ago, is a new breed of mass-market branded RSS Reader ... which integrates into Outlook (to consume RSS content), as well as Internet Explorer and FireFox (to directly subscribe to RSS feeds while surfing).

But why a new breed of branded Reader?

a] It integrates with Outlook, which most other branded RSS Readers don't (usually either web-based or desktop applications)

b] Publishers can create their own branded version (unfortunatelly only with their own feeds right now) in 5 minutes, and then distribute it via their Inclue! landing page, which is also automatically generated.

c] Publishers that sign-up for their affiliate program receive a commission when end-users decide to upgrade their Reader to the premium version.

d] The Include! Reader is based on viral methods to further spread your RSS feeds and help you get new subscribers, for example using the FeedBurner Flare tool to entice your RSS subscribers to get your branded Inclue! Reader. Similar links are also displayed when a user forwards an RSS feed item to his friends via Inclue!

To see how it works, take a look at my quick version (just a demo, haven't included all the feeds, a decent description and so on).

Inclue! also does a great job of promoting RSS to end-users, giving them concrete benefits of how RSS will actually help them ... from tracking eBay auctions to getting job notifications. Just take a look at the link above.

Essentially, the Reader is targeted at new RSS users, giving them simple functions, especially with their ease of subscribing to feeds with just one click.

Now I'm just waiting for them to add visual branding possibilities ... :)

Become an Authority and Promote

Sharing your knowledge with others is helpful when promoting. Depending on what kind of books you write, you can become an authority in the field. By doing so, you not only help others that are interested in what you write about but create a perfect non-threatening situation to promote your work. When people get to know you and regularly read about the experiences and information you share with others, they begin to respect and trust you.

Yahoo! have created a medium in which you can do just that; Yahoo! Answers. Even Donald Trump has his profile there. What he uses it for will for sure create some money, I'm sure.

Check it out and start utilizing it to connect with like minded people. It is by giving that we receive.

Get Your Book on Reader's Hands Fast

There is not doubt that the main reason you wrote your book was to get it on readers hands as quickly as they were off the press. But is easier said than done, right? No matter what inspired you to write your book, you had a message in mind, but did you know its audience?

I hate to break it to you, but this is a business and even though I'm talking to artists here most of the time, this is the reality. When you think about writing your book you must know your audience, the message and all the potential promotional ideas that could propel the book's sale. You might also want to consider if there is a possibility for sequels on the book. Just think of the Chicken Soup series, or Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings just to name a few. It could be fiction or non-fiction, it really doesn't matter. What I'm talking about here is a book marketing plan that will take your book from the press to your readers in the shortest amount of time, that's what we want.

When I created Guerrilla Marketer's Cafe is was totally out of my efforts to market my own book. I found along the way many authors who were on the same path as me. I love to network with authors who are focused on letting the world know about their books which is not an easy task.
Before too long we accumulated enough information and ideas to market our books effectively. Authors started to put many of the ideas and promotions posted on our active Forum obtaining good results which we shared on our Brag Board. We encouraged and helped each other reach our individual audience. What we noticed was that those who did something to promote their book on a daily basis were the ones who obtained better results.

Being informed and then acting on the information is key in this business and between the site and this blog we are trying to do just that. I would like to hear from you as how the blog and site is helping you or not. It's my goal to continue to grow and improve it anyway I can. So if you would like to share your thoughts I'm sure other authors will thank you, not to mention myself. It is in this sharing that we have grown to over 120 members and we expect to add many more as we do our best to help them promote their books free.

To your success!
